  • No justice in Shenandoah

May 3rd, 2009 [Civil Rights, Financial, General, Marriage Equality]

Some satisfied, others outraged with verdict for immigrant’s death – CNN.com.

Absolutely appalling. What the hell kind of country do we live in when this sort of circus passes for justice? Has nothing changed in the 21st century? I guess the jury foreman will he know was right when these kids get arrested for their second hate-filled murder, which I am sure is forthcoming. The jury foreman said:

“I believe strongly that some of the people on the jury were racist. I believe strongly that some of the people on the jury had their minds made up maybe before the first day of trial,” said Maclin. “And I believe the four boys that were involved the most are racist. I absolutely do. Derrick Donchak wore a US Border Patrol t-shirt to a Halloween party after Luis died. That is racist. That is beyond in bad taste. That is horrible.”

I think one of the people who commented on my last entry regarding this issue said it best. Elvin Rivera wrote:

If the players roles were reversed and Luis Ramirez was on trial for killing one of the boys you can be sure that the verdict would have been guilty. “Of course he’s guilty. He’s an illegal Mexican immigrant.” How could those “boys” forget that they come from immigrant roots with names like Piekarsky and Donchak?

They probably didn’t have to suffer the taunts and prejudice their grandparents and parents did when young but I’m sure they heard the stories from them. Maybe they came away with the wrong lesson. Maybe they were taught intolerance instead of tolerance. I don’t know. But the results are very obvious. They learned to hate.

It’s time for the US Attorney’s office to step in and arrest those murderers and charge them with violating Ramirez’s civil rights. Regardless of his legal status in this country he had the God given right to live. The US Constitution guarantees it. Not just for us but for everyone.

Today is Sunday and I’m sure many of the citizens of Shenandoah Pa will be in church this morning. I hope some of them pray for the family of Luis Ramirez. I hope all of them pray for forgiveness and mercy for themselves because they’ll need it.

    ‘Nuff said.

Teens acquitted of murder in immigrant’s fatal beating – CNN.com

Teens acquitted of murder in immigrant’s fatal beating – CNN.com.

So let me get this straight – they acknowledged that the teens beat the guy, the guy died, and yet they were acquitted?

I don’t care who delivered the kick that killed him. They all contributed, and should all bear the consequences.

So far, she said, she's staying put. "I believe in the traditional tenets of the Republican Party: strong national defense, fiscal responsibility, individual opportunity. I haven't abandoned those principles that have been the essence of the Republican Party. I think the Republican Party has abandoned those principles.

Commentary: Miss California, thanks for being honest – CNN.com

April 22nd, 2009 [Civil Rights, General, Marriage Equality, Television]

Commentary: Miss California, thanks for being honest – CNN.com.

    My take:

My problem with her answer was not that she expressed her opinion about what marriage *should* be, but that she displayed an ignorance of the reality faced by same-gender couples. For most of us, the “choice” of same-sex marriage is not available. We don’t live in a country where people get to choose opposite-sex marriage or same-sex marriage; we live in a country where people like Miss California get to make that decision FOR people like me. So to me, it sounded like she was either completely misinformed as to whether same-gender couples can actually marry in America, or was saying, “Hey, you chose to be gay, so you don’t get to be married.” Either way, her answer was far from honest. An opinion is an opinion, but she flat out lied.

Umm…. how can you “choose” when you can’t actually “choose”? This answer would have made perfect sense and been perfectly respectable IF we actually HAD the right to marry. But hey, guess what? We don’t. So we don’t get to choose between same-sex marriage and opposite-sex marriage (like it’s some kind of eenie meenie miney moe or something). We get those choices made FOR us by people like her.

Pro-Gay Sites Filtered From Tennessee Students | Threat Level from Wired.com

April 16th, 2009 [Civil Rights, Education, General, LGBT]

Pro-Gay Sites Filtered From Tennessee Students | Threat Level from Wired.com.

Public schools in Tennessee are filtering access to online websites discussing lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender issues, but are not blocking sites advocating “reparative” therapy to change their lifestyle.

School officials are blaming the filtering company. The filtering company is blaming the schools. (and Amazon.com is blaming a glitch… yeah.)

Meanwhile, what scandalous information was being sought when the filter came to light?

“When I found out about this web-filtering software, I wasn’t looking for anything sexual or inappropriate, I was looking for information about scholarships for LGBT students, and I couldn’t get to it because of this software,” said Andrew Emitt, a 17-year-old Central High senior in Knoxville.

Even worse – search Amazon for “homosexuality” and see what the first listing is. Somebody paid off somebody, because the category listing comes SECOND. Look what comes first.
