I love random history articles. At least we know what he meant by his inscription, thanks to his interview! (or at least, what he wanted people to think he meant)

Looks to me as if he adjusted his version of the inscription after the fact as to present a moral justification for invasion, occupation, and subjugation, when at the time there is absolutely no inkling of that kind of thought. The previous comment is clearly an application of modern thinking (which is, of course, morally correct) to period events and thought.
